100%. We actually had an impression this was available, however it is not. As others said, Confluence and Google docs have solved the issue perfectly

This would be fantastic, a google doc like experience is ideal.

This is a must! Would be nice if editing was "locked" while someone else was editing. Additionally, we've had KBs in the past that would indicate "Joe Smith is currently editing this page", so you would know and could reach out to confirm when they were done.

Confluence solved this with a synchronous editing feature, but that opened up a lot of consistency problems with pending Drafts.

A lock is probably the blunt-force solution to this but risky when people forget to properly close the editor.

Absolutely yes! Ideally the article would be locked when it's being edited to prevent anyone else from trying to edit simultaneously. We had article updates overwritten with this exact problem.
