Better Image Organization/Search Bar
complete
Victoria Lewin
I would like to be able to organize my photo uploads into folders. Right now, everything is very disorganized as there's no way to group images.
As a second part of this feature, it would be nice to have a search bar to find specific images when inserting an image into an article. You can search for images in the uploads section, but not when you are actually in an article looking for an image that you want to insert (which is when you need the search bar most). This would save us from having to re-upload images over and over since we can't find images we want to re-use.

Denis Omerovic: Can you please elaborate on which suggestions have been implemented in this completed story? There are a lot here from different people, and I'd like to be able to check against expected behavior.

Does this include the ability to use auto-translate of a page that inserts same-name images from their appropriate language folder?

This is great! Thanks for putting this on the pipeline :-)
The ability to create folders for images (as in File Explorer), sub folders, rename images etc. would be very helpful, as well as, the ability to change an image, then save or replace an existing image with the same file name and have each occurrence of that image in every article it appears update automatically. Additionally, in parallel terms to being able to see how articles are related to other articles, it would save a lot of time to be able to find all the articles a particular image is hosted in, and edit it once within all of them.
Thanks again.

We are currently working on new UI for Files Manager. Added ability to create/rename/delete folders, search in specific folders, search by file extension… In addition to this we are planning to include something similar on editor page where you can simply search or navigate files and upload it directly in your article. I'm curious to hear your thoughts Victoria Lewin Sharon Chester omdesign Victor Solomon Leah Grossart

Denis Omerovic: The features that would be most helpful within a new Files Manager UI for my team would be:
1) Not only search but also a sort function by date/name/file type, both ascending and descending, for individual files and folders.
2) the ability to click a file within File Manager and get a list of which articles it is currently inserted to
Denis Omerovic
Sharon Chester: I really like this idea. We will add it :)
Sharon Chester
Denis Omerovic: Additional suggestions from my team:
3) For the file manager within the article editor page, a preview pane so you can check the file before you use it.
4) In both the File Manager proper or the File Manager within the article editor page, the ability to get the file's object URL (either by right-clicking or some other action) so that the file can be easily inserted for those that prefer to create/update articles via the HTML editor instead of the WYSIWYG.
5) Some of our file names are quite long, so the ability to add/delete/expand columns to improve visibility will be helpful.
6) The file type icons feel unnecessary, especially given the valuable real estate near file names. They're doubly unnecessary if we have the ability to add a column and sort by file type.

Denis Omerovic: This would be great!
On the subject of images, another thing I noticed: image replace doesn't always work. If I upload a different image with the same name, the old image is still there. This means having to delete and re-upload, which causes the image link to change.
Not a huge problem, unless you use the same image in several documents.

Related to this, the search function in the uploads section means nothing to me when all my image files (named at the time of capture/creation according to standards we put in place) are renamed to meaningless numbers. I would get more out of the current search and future organization efforts if my file names were retained when I inserted them into an article.

ability to grant uploaded content ids and be inserted by id

Would like the ability for uploaded files such as images to have an id, the same way an article would, so that it could be organized (in folders and with understandable names), reused (inserted the same way you can insert articles), etc.

The existing pattern of showing every single image ever uploaded had got to be an unnecessary load on your servers too! It's very tedious to scroll through everything when a folder would help very much.

Do you folks also think it would be super cool if we indexed all the text of your images, so you could search images by the text that's inside them?
Leah Grossart
Emil Hajric: We do!
Victor Solomon
Emil Hajric: Yes, absolutely!
This way we can insert and classify in the text, the screen id(s) in which it appears in and thus change it when needed. Thanks for putting image manegement into your radar!

Emil Hajric: It sounds good, but I am concerned about implementation. I notice in the article insert 'auto-search' that the widget is searching through all languages. I don't know when I would need to insert a different language article. So, search by "text of the image" is confusing and I'm not clear on how it would work.
In our case, what would work awesome and be amazing, is if we could add other language variants of the main image when adding it to primary language content. Then the images could get inserted properly during the auto-translate procedure.
We try to use language agnostic images and utilize text to describe them in the surrounding paragraphs when possible. So, IF one image -> insert into all languages. IF multiple images -> in each language assigned. IF missing language -> insert the primary language version.
We have a large amount of identical images with translated text in them already, documenting the different language versions of our App. We normally put them in different folders organized by language, with the same folder structure and same image name for each language (like: /images/en/camera-face.png). Then, when we auto-translate, it is a simple matter to go into the code view and switch the language folder ( /en/ for /fr/ etc.) to have the right image in the right place.
Going through the process of adding each image 'by hand' after translating is very time consuming and awkward. I much prefer the ability to zip through the code view and switch out the language.
If you have self managed folder names, I can see this working, but so long as you have long ID numbers as part of the filename, our normal method cannot work because the filenames will always be randomly different.
